Number Series Questions are a part of the Cogat Test's Quantitative Battery.

In the Number Series Questions, students are provided with a sequence of numbers that follow a pattern.

They are required to identify which number should come next in the sequence.


Example 1

2 4 6 8 ?

A 10 B 12 C 11 D 6 E 8

It’s easy to realize that each number in the sequence increases by 2.

2+2=4; 4+2=6; 6+2=8; etc.

Apply the same rule to the number 8.

8 + 2 = 10.

The right answer is “A”.


Example 2

2 4 3 5 4 ?

A 5 B 1 C 11 D 10 E 6

The sequence follows the rule: +2, -1, +2, -1, +2, etc.

2+2=4; 4-1=3; 3+2=5; 5-1=4; etc.

Apply the same rule to the number 4.

4 + 2 = 6

The right answer is “E”.

To correctly answer these questions, the student will need to be able to identify the patterns in a sequence of numbers and provide the missing item. Therefore, it is important to practice, working with sequences of numbers.
